1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module explores the case-study of Zambia, exploring contextual issues such as post-colonial challenges and opportunities; the impact and legacy of Structural Adjustment Policies; prominent economic sectors such as commodities (copper) and tourism; the impact of AIDS on the population and the recent influence of Chinese development interventions.
All of these characters have a unique impact on, and need for, different educational interventions. In this module we will explore the interaction between Zambia’s development challenges and education. For example the need to train teachers to meet the increasing school enrolment, private provision of education through low-fee schools, environmental education in the copper belt, adult training and capacity building for women and orphans, Health education, etc.
To ensure students are able to complete this module alongside modules that require fieldwork, this module will follow a pattern of delivery commensurate with the required* module Zambia Fieldwork, with reference to Education.
2.Outline syllabus
Key concepts: knowledge and understanding of education and international development through Zambia case study
Introduction to issues in Zambia and the role of education within them
Awareness of the roles and work of the donor/development sector within education in Zambia
Researching education and development
Current issues:
Interaction between environmental and social spheres (copper belt, tourism)
Education for All pressures on schooling infrastructure
Private education/ low fee paying schools
Chinese investment and impacts
Health education
Vocational education
3.Teaching and learning activities
Lectures and seminar exploration of development issues in Zambia, linking them to theories and concepts of Social Justice from core modules in level 4
Looking forwards to and preparing research activities for Field Trip in Zambia
