1. Brief description and aims of module:
In this module, you will examine the relationship between education and international development. This module aims to develop your understanding of the complexities of international development, aid, global agendas for education, and education in developing countries. As part of the module, you will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the history of international development, to question how education contributes towards development and to explore key issues and challenges facing teachers and learners in developing countries. The module provides you with tools to understand how issues like gender, conflict, inequality, and language of instruction affect educational opportunities for children in developing countries and to understand how international and national actors attempt to address these challenges. To illustrate these themes, we will examine education in traditional development contexts.
2.Outline syllabus
The module develops your knowledge and understanding of education and international development through three themes:
1. Introduction to international development and the role of education within it
2. Key issues for education and development – case studies
3. Researching education and development
3.Teaching and learning activities
This module has lectures and seminars. Throughout the year you will also have 1-to-1 tutorials with your tutor to help you prepare for your assessments. Occasionally, sessions may be delivered as e-learning weeks rather than face to face.
You also have 148 hours of independent study time associated with this module. You should use this time to do the assigned readings associated with each week – this reading will enable you to come to seminars prepared and will help you to prepare for your assessments. You will also use independent study time towards the preparation of your assessments (including doing your own independent research to support your assignments) and for meeting with other students for group work assessments.
