1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module is concerned with explorations into the self as a conscious site for both choreography and performance. The transformation of ideas and the representation of experiences will be investigated through the exploration of a range of choreographic methodologies. The module will encourage you to explore and engage with the intellectual processes of creative dance practice in your own work and the work of others (e.g. Bausch, Wim Vandekeybus, Hofesh Shechter). The module builds on the creative skills acquired at Level 4 and requires you to develop versatility in order to apply these skills in a range of new contexts. In addition, the module is preparing you for the independent learning that is required at Level 6.
2. Outline syllabus:
This module will allow you to explore a range of approaches that can be used to translate ideas into choreographic forms. Working both individually and alongside other students you will construct creative material that uses the conscious self and personal experience as a starting point for investigation. The development of your improvisational skills will be a key element of this module.
Self-reflective practice and using peer and tutor feedback will also play a valuable role in helping you to develop a critical and creative mind-set. This will encourage you to continue to identify your individual strengths and plan how you will address areas for personal development.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The course is taught through practical classes, lectures and tutorials. The practical sessions are designed to encourage a climate of creative experimentation, interrogation and discovery. Sessions will combine theory and practice and will encourage you to explore and articulate key concepts and theories.
You will be expected, as part of directed learning, to take part in a range of activities, such as practicing and performing and theatre visits. You will be expected to actively utilise the bibliography in the module handbook and to contribute to discussions related to the recommended readings. You are encouraged to use the video loan library and to attend performances in order to widen your knowledge and understanding of creative dance practices. Guidance for the development of research and writing skills will be given during the sessions.
The dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva form the basis of the teaching and rehearsing spaces for this module. Theoretical and practical work is supported by the university library, digital video resources, and the knowledge and experience of tutors and the student cohort.
