1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module aims to build on your understand of the technical skills from the Body in Performance and Somatics modules at Level 4. The module will facilitate your creative, performing and expressive physical practice that you encounter in other areas of the course.
You will focus on the progressive development of your codified technique practice through a more rigorous exploration into your qualitative and expressive potential alongside the improvement of your flexibility, stamina and strength.
This module also develops your skills in the context of partner work through an investigation into Contact Improvisation. You will reflect on the shared force, weight and spontaneity of movement dialogue within yourself and partner(s). The module aims to develop your exploration into a more personal body awareness, introducing a sophisticated yet intuitive approach to working with your peers.
2. Outline syllabus:
Practical sessions will focus both on the way you inhabit your body and your understanding of the dialogue between body, force and mass. In technique class you will explore self-motivation alongside safe and appropriate physical adventure. A focus on movement improvisation will be developed in tandem with widening your technical vocabulary.
In Contact Improvisation you will be working from the exploration of physical communication with the floor and develop methods of discovering alternative physical approaches in order to develop your body as an intuitive tool. Through a sophisticated and intuitive approach to physical contact you will develop your body awareness and reflect on the shared force, weight and spontaneity of movement dialogue within yourself and partner(s).
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module is taught through regular practical sessions. The module aims to, through a careful and guided progressive process, improve your understanding of safe studio based movement practice and etiquette. You will have regular feedback during class to help develop your individual reflection and evaluation. Moderated presentation classes will be another valuable way for you to receive feedback on your progress. Self directed study will be encouraged as part of your learning experience along with the filming of your practice to help you self evaluate and improve.
