This module focuses on the introduction, practice and development of essential practical production and staging techniques. Throughout the module you engage in a range of practical and theoretical projects and tests reflecting the best industry practice. You are required to learn Health and Safety regulations and safe working practices to prepare you for working on productions at level 5.
The module aims to:
Develop practical production practice skills
Introduce professional production practice
Develop collaborative, practical, and organisational skills
2.Outline syllabus:
Stagecraft explores the core carpentry and scenic construction processes required of prop-makers and scenographers. This will cover use of hand tools, power tools and safe working-practices, as well as sculpting and casting techniques with a range of materials.
Stage-management explores the fundamental principles of running a rehearsal, creating a mark out, managing the stage and integrating these processes into the production. Both of these elements are an introduction to two of the key areas of specialisms embedded with the overall programme.
You engage with the two areas through a series of short introductory practical and theoretical projects within the Stagecraft and Stage Management subjects. You develop carpentry, prop making and stage management skills through practice and experimentation and receive induction into the University Theatre and scenery workshop, as well as training in the use of power tools and safe working practices.
3.Teaching and learning activities
Tutors provide subject specific lecture support throughout all projects, as well as additional support available through tutorials and project planning meetings. You develop practical skills during lectures and your assessment is through reflection on your learning and development.
All projects are arranged and agreed by the marking tutor. The challenges are as unique and original as the projects. The learning environment mirrors best industry practice and working to deadlines is essential.
All projects are introductory to allow you to make an informed decision about how you progress into level 5. You identify your intended specialism/s during tutorial discussions at the end of semester 1.
