1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module will introduce students to the fundamental concepts relating to the management of sport, through analysis of organisations and the wider sporting industry. It explores the contexts in which management of sport, leisure and physical activity takes place; and the importance attached to the effective management within the sporting industry, organisations and sports businesses.
Students should be able to evaluate theory and methodology which underpins Sport Management and demonstrate an understanding of sport management from a range of perspectives, as well as factors influencing and shaping sports participation. This module will give students an understanding of the sports management industry across a local, national and global level.
2. Outline syllabus
Throughout the module you will engage with case study work, independent research and in-class debate.
You will be required to undertake exercises that will challenge you to consider the sporting industry in relation to the external environment and a range of businesses and sporting organisations, considering areas of:
Understand and apply theories, concepts and principles of management areas to a sporting context.
Offer insight into the organisations and structures responsible for sport and the political context.
Explore business and management issues within the sports industry.
Market research and analysis related to the sporting industry and employability within the industry.
3. Teaching and learning activities
Teaching on the module will consist of a 2-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar each week. The purpose of the lecture is to provide you with a broad overview of the key topics covered within the module. Within lectures you will be expected to take notes and engage, by way of asking and/or answering questions. The learning from lectures will be embedded into seminars. Guest speakers from industry will deliver lectures and you will be given the opportunity to network, engage and ask questions of them.
The seminars will be very participative in nature, and we will use a variety of different teaching methods to enable a deeper understanding of all module topic areas.
