1. Brief description and aims of module:
Students will interrogate aspects of Bath Spa University student life through the lens of psychological science to develop the understanding, skills, and strategies to approach their university career with greater knowledge and intention.
Module Aims:
To meaningfully explore components of academic performance and a positive transition to university
To leverage the application of psychology to become more successful academically, socially, and/or emotionally in your own Bath Spa University transition and student life
To develop useful skills in scientific literacy, critical thinking, self-reflection, written and oral communication, and teamwork
2. Outline syllabus:
Within this first year module, students will discover what psychology can teach us about how to succeed at university and apply this to specific aspects of their own life to gain a richer understanding of best practices, skills, and strategies for their remaining time on campus.
Students will discuss the science behind topics that are relevant to academic performance, belonging, and wellbeing, such as learning, motivation, self-control, culture, relationships, health, and happiness.
In addition to completing readings and reflection exercises that apply course concepts to their own lives, students will work on a project to share their knowledge for the benefit of incoming Bath Spa University students.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Teaching will consist of a weekly lecture and seminar. Lectures will introduce a topic for the week, and provide opportunity for class participation and formative discussion. Seminars will explore the content in greater depth, with activities of application and critique. Seminars will also be used to support the group collaboration, as well as development and refinement of work leading to the final project.
