1. Brief description and aims of module:
In this module you will examine the relationship of space, place and product in the representation of contemporary fashion narratives. You will develop an awaresss of the formation of fashion images with a focus on the fashion object or product within a constructed or non constructed environment. Considering carefully the significance of real and imagined spaces in the representation and dissemination of the fashion image.
Understanding of a wide range of potential platforms for your fashion image making is encouraged during this module. You are to carefully consider the context in which you will curate and display your final output considering 2D printed outputs or 3D spaces, installations and virtual presentations.
The module aims to:
● Explore practical skills and build confidence in art direction and project coordination on fashion locations
● Creative exploration of space in the construction of fashion narratives
● Develop a critical voice in your understanding of historical, cultural and social concerns within fashion image making
● Develop confidence in team based activities and technical workshop methods
● Explore a range of contemporary platforms for the dissemination of your photographic practice.
2.Outline syllabus:
Research studies within this module explore creative responses to interior and exterior spaces. Whether real or constructed these spaces are explored for their influence on the fashion image. You will explore the histories of environment and space within fashion image making. When examining these spaces you will also consider how the environment informs our understanding of cultural, social and political identities. These research activities are supported with field trips, seminars and guest lectures.
Technical workshops with industry practitioners examine interior and exterior locations. Through practical styling, set/prop fabrication and lighting workshops you will explore the various collaborative roles within a fashion image making team.
Equipment choices and observational skills with lighting and weather conditions develop planning and organisational abilities necessary for photographic practice in industry.
Throughout the module we will ask you to document your progression in the module and reflect on your collaboration and participation in group activities. To help you do this you will be required to keep a reflective journal. A range of project materials and guides published on Minerva will support the module.
3.Teaching and learning activities:
Your module briefing introduces you to the parameters of the project and explores the histories of the themes within this module and examines contemporary photographic practice.
Tutorials provide active spaces for discussion and feedback with staff and your peers. Research is also further explored in tutorials and assists you to develop your ability to contextualize conceptual and practical approaches to your practice.
