1. Brief description and aims of module:
Fashion Identities explores the construction and communication of identity through the investigation of the figurative form in fashion narratives. You will extend your knowledge of art direction and styling methods in image creation and explore representations of identity through dress within constructed and non constructed environments. You will also be introduced to the construction of fashion narratives through the examination of photographic fashion sequences within fashion promotion.
The module aims to:
● Introduce various approaches to research enriching your creative process
● Explore representation, ethics and diversity in the study of fashion codes and identity
● Expand your knowledge of fashion contexts for photographic practice
● Encourage experimentation with editing and sequencing photographic narratives
● Introduce a solid foundation of essential practical lighting skills
● Explore art direction and styling skills
2.Outline syllabus:
This module explores the process of collaboration between content, subject and photographer. Art direction and styling workshops complement study in this area. Practical sessions also include set direction, choreography and movement workshops delivered by industry professionals. Technical workshops in lighting production are explored in both studio and external locations.
Industry guests provide lectures and seminars on contemporary practice in this field and encourage a critical awareness of representation, ethics, gender, sexuality, fashion codes, semiotics, ethnicity and diversity. You will study and explore the visual language and codes of global fashion culture from the past to the present day.
Throughout the module we will ask you to reflect on your progress. To help you do this you will be required to regularly keep a reflective journal. A range of project materials and guides published on Minerva will support the module.
3.Teaching and learning activities:
Through your project brief you will explore the construction of fashion identities within editorial fashion sequences. You will receive demonstrations and hands on practical experience in a range of lighting techniques and photographic equipment. Practical workshops in set direction will be facilitated within school workshops with technical support. Art direction and styling methods are delivered through research exercises and practical workshops. You will present your progress within group tutorials.
