1. Brief description and aims of module:
In this module you examine different photographic perspectives and representations of landscape. Through the module you investigate the role of memory, metaphor and geographies in forming a personal creative response to Place. Cultural, social and economic factors are critically examined in seminars for their contribution to your understanding and perception of global environments.
The module allows you greater exploration of self-directed themes within the genre, to build confidence and independence in preparation for the next level of the course. The construction of narratives through dialogue between image, text and layout in the book form is explored to develop skills in observation, documentation and communication.
The principles of editorial design for print are developed through book design and software workshops. Equipment choices and observational skills with lighting and weather conditions develop planning and organisational abilities necessary for editorial or art based practice in the industry.
Understanding of a wide range of potential outputs for photographic work is encouraged through visits to photographic exhibitions or festivals during this module.
The module aims to:
● Explore practical skills and build confidence operating in a range of environments and conditions.
● Explore editing, sequencing and production skills for book production contexts.
● Develop an original creative voice through critical analysis and understanding of historical and cultural factors.
● Encourage and build confidence with independent learning and self-authorship.
2. Outline syllabus:
Lectures and practical demonstrations will introduce you to the approaches and equipment involved in making images in the landscape and the design skills for producing an outcome in book form.
A series of seminars will examine the way in which historical and cultural factors impact on how landscape is perceived and represented in contemporary photographic practice.
Throughout the module we will ask you to reflect on your progress. To help you do this you will be required to keep a regular reflective journal.
A range of project materials and guides published on Minerva will support the module
3.Teaching and learning activities:
The module begins with a lecture and project brief that examines the historical and cultural factors that inform and define our experience of Place. Practical sessions and tutorials discuss the approaches and technical aspects of working in the landscape.
Through research presentations you will further develop your ability to contextualise the conceptual and practical aspects of your photographic work.
As the module progresses you will engage in the following:
● Presentations and seminars
● Technical workshops
● Individual and group tutorials
● Guidance and support with reflective evaluation
By the close of the module you will have gained the confidence, skills and ability to work independently in the landscape, establishing a sound preparation for the demands of a more self - directed approach in level 5.
