1. Brief description and aims of module:
During the module you explore the construction and communication of identity through photography. Projects provide the framework for an exploration of the way we visually represent ourselves and respond to the world around us. The notion of identity is explored through environmental portraiture, involving and addressing the collaborative nature and issues of photographing individuals or groups, on location.
This module introduces you to the building of photographic narrative through examining the relationship between subject and context and experimentation with forms of presentation. Sequences and typologies are explored through print and screen based contexts. A series of technical studio and daylight lighting workshops support and complement this study.
Workshops in digital workflow practices and software are provided for the establishment of your professional work practices. Lectures and seminar discussions with visiting professionals encourage your awareness and critical debate of concepts and issues associated with this genre. This module is characterised by experimentation in the application of visual language, and a developed awareness of photographic practice and theory.
The module aims to:
Encourage initiative for decision making in unpredictable contexts and to develop planning and organisational abilities.
Investigate further research and critical thinking of photographic practice, history and culture.
Introduce a solid foundation of essential practical lighting skills
Encourage conceptual and analytical experimentation with the narrative structure of photographic images.
