1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module introduces you to the core components of photographic practice and the construction of images. It examines the characteristics common to all photographs and how these make up a visual language capable of communicating different meanings. Projects involve a practical and analytical exploration of ways of seeing and interpreting a subject, alongside establishing effective working procedures and the acquisition of a sound skills base.
The module offers you the opportunity to explore and experiment with analogue equipment, materials and processes, laying essential foundations and understanding for subsequent digital practice. Darkroom workshops in film processing and the making of fine prints support the realization of concepts. The practical and creative explorations are underpinned and informed by research tasks and critical evaluation of
the work of historical and contemporary photographers. There are opportunities for you in this module to engage with the historical background and wider culture of photography through international and national trips.
The module aims to:
- Provide an introduction to the key elements of photographic practice and
encourage an experimental, conceptual and analytical approach.
- Investigate practical skills through specific analogue practices.
- Introduce research and critical thinking of photographic practice, history
and culture.
- Demonstrate good studentship and engagement.
2. Outline syllabus:
A series of lectures, seminars and practical demonstrations will introduce you to the darkroom, photographic equipment, and processes used in making ‘analogue’ filmbased images. Through a series of seminars on major photographers and artists you will be introduced to a variety of theoretical concepts relating to contemporary photographic practice.
Throughout the module we will ask you to reflect on your progress. To help you do this you will be required to keep a regular reflective journal. A range of project materials and guides published on Minerva will support the module.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module begins with a series of practical workshop introductions to a range of photographic equipment and techniques. You will receive a project brief that will integrate practice with theory as you explore analogue lens based image making. By emphasising the importance of your practical research skills you will develop your ability to contextualise your photographic work, and to record and communicate your ideas effectively through a reflective journal.
As the module progresses you will engage in the following:
- Technical workshops
- Individual and group tutorials
- Guidance and support with reflective evaluation
