1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module introduces you to core workshops, materials and processes in furniture and product design. It is a basis for the development of your technical and material knowledge, which you will continue to build on throughout the course.
As your first course module, it aims to support you in developing your understanding of working in an art and design community, and the School’s philosophy of ‘Thinking through Making’. It provides you with the opportunity to begin developing your own design practices and independent working methods, in both the studio and in the workshops.
This module also introduces you to safe working practices through Health and Safety inductions.
2.Outline syllabus:
You will have the opportunity to learn basic methods of construction in a range of materials and build confidence in workshop and design studio environments. These activities will include technical tasks and inductions, and will be structured around a creative brief encouraging you to take a hands-on and exploratory approach, informing a physical outcome. You will also be introduced to research, reflective practice and critical evaluation.

3.Teaching and Learning activities:
Will usually include:
Workshop introductions and technical tasks
Introductions to research and critical thinking
Group and individual tutorials and critical reviews
Study trips and / or gallery visits
Personal presentation, display and documentation of work
Independent working on directed project work
Active participation in taught sessions and directed learning
