1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module introduces you to the basics of interior design: space, light and surface. You will also be introduced to basic technical drawing skills and will focus on the design for the retail environment. You will be asked to engage particularly with issues of style and aesthetics
As your first Design Studio module, it aims to support you in developing your understanding of working in an art and design community, and the School’s philosophy of ‘Thinking through Making’. It provides you with the opportunity to begin developing your own design ideas and ways of working.
This module will also include an introduction to the School workshops and safe working practices through Health and Safety inductions.
2.Outline syllabus:
You will have the opportunity to learn basic drawing skills, both by hand and digitally through a series of studio exercises and tasks structured around the design brief encouraging you to take a hands-on, iterative, exploratory approach to develop your ideas and inform your design proposals.
In addition to the practical work you will also be introduced to other elements e.g. research, reflective practice and critical evaluation.

3.Teaching and learning activities:
Alongside mostly self-directed studio work these will usually include:
Workshop introductions and technical tasks
Staff presentations
Presentation, display and documentation of your individual work
Introductions to research and critical thinking
Group and individual tutorials and critical reviews
Active participation in taught sessions and directed learning
