1. Brief description and aims of module:

This module provides further foundation to the approaches adopted by a geographer in undertaking field observations and investigations. The module involves 2-3 days of fieldwork It will be supported by preparatory seminars and post-trip project workshops, as appropriate. It aims to:

• Develop an understanding of the geographical and environmental processes and contemporary issues in a region.

• Apply the basic tenets of effective field craft in the geographical settings

• Provide the opportunity to utilise modern geotechnologies in data collection and analysis

• To develop digital literacy skills

2.Outline syllabus

The module provides a fieldwork experience equivalent to up to 4-5 days days of field-based investigation.  During the module you will develop and apply knowledge of geographical field craft and investigative approaches, in order to explore landscape, development and society issues in the study region. Our focus is on inclusivity and adjustments to fieldwork activities can be made as applicable. 

3.Teaching and learning activities

Structured preparation and follow-up sessions in the form of seminars and workshops are added to time spent in the field, and will further develop your understanding of a number of current issues in the study region. In the field, you will undertake a mixture of staff-led field exercises.  Appropriate support and training in field craft, data analysis and report writing will be provided, and Reference Lists and other resources will be indicated to support your reading out-of-class. Tutors will strive for inclusivity and adjustments to fieldwork activities where appropriate.

• Description: Group presentation (15 minutes)

• % Weighting: 40%

Assessment Item 2:

• Assessment Type: Course Work

• Description: Individual Field Investigation Report (2,400 words equivalent)

• % Weighting: 60%
