1. Brief description and aims of module:
Game art design is a key pre-production process in the creation of games that involves conceptualising and crafting the look of environments, characters, objects and UI. It is a critical aspect of game making that has significant influence over the tone and personality of the game, the articulation of story, and to some extent, player behaviour. Generating engaging, readable and consistent visuals that complement gameplay is a rewarding yet challenging task that requires creative vision, artistic skill and a good understanding of tried and tested design principles. This module aims to help you cultivate all three using 2D game art as a point of entry.
In 2D Game Art we explore a range of game art styles that include pixel art, vector art, monochromatic art, flat art and cutout art. You learn to analyse the visual content of existing titles, build an understanding of core design theory, and undergo the steps needed to turn abstract ideas into 2D materials that are ready to implement in a game. You learn how to construct a cohesive scene based on the creation, curation, and layering of 2D art assets to make an engaging and believable world for the player. We think about the function of game art, consider visual language, and take time to review how to negotiate stereotypes and tropes in order to realise settings and characters that are believable, relatable and meaningful.

3.Teaching and learning activities
Class Hours
This module adopts a studio approach that prioritises practical exploration of the tools, techniques and effects of 2D game art. Studio activities are complemented by critical analysis activities and seminar discussion on theory to provide context, and ample points of tutor/peer review to help shape the direction of your work.
Independent Learning
Don’t just play games, ‘draw’ games. The more time you spend generating concept art and creating game art assets, the more balanced, intriguing and original your ideas will turn out. Independent learning focuses heavily on practicing both paper based and digital forms of game art creation. You should find appropriate time to extend the work you initiate in class.
