1. Brief description and aims of module:
The module will introduce students to basic use of lighting, camera, audio and editing technique and practice. The module will more broadly cover the process and workflow of media production. There will be an emphasis on storytelling and narrative structure as applied to fiction based drama. You will view, discuss and analyse media to gain an understanding of the use and practice of these production techniques to craft an engaging narrative.
The work completed during this module and FTV4001-20 ‘Introduction to Sound and Camera II’ will help you tackle the specialist modules FT5000 ‘Experimenting with Specialist Roles in Production’ and FTV5001-20 ‘Short Collaborative Fiction Film’ at Level Five.
2.Outline syllabus:
The workshops and seminars will cover:
basic principles of exposure and image capture
basic theory and practice of video camera use
basic lighting for camera
composition and framing
basic sound principles and audio recording
simple audio setups, editing and audio processing
basic narrative structures and key storytelling elements
basic video editing
generating a premise for a short fiction film
development, refinement and production of a short film
Project management
effective use of recce and risk assessment procedures
constructive peer review and evaluation of work
3.Teaching and learning activities:
The module will use a mixture of lectures, seminars, screenings and informal drama production workshops. Out of these workshops, each student will develop mastery of basic production skills through a number of technical training sessions, practical film production challenges and peer feedback seminars.
