1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module will form the second module of the core of English teaching in Year 1, and will build on the knowledge and skills garnered in Parallel Texts in the first semester. It will also anticipate the further development of critical work in your Level 5 core modules. Rather than attempting to introduce you to degree-level critical practice by way of a single period or genre, like Parallel Texts, it utilises a range of texts from the 18th to the 20th century in order to stimulate student response to a number of central questions in literary studies. These include the definitions of what ‘literature’ actually is, the connections between ‘literature’ and other forms of written communication, and the complex relationships between ‘literature’ and ‘history’ or ‘reality’. At the core of the module is a selection of critical readings from writers, readers and critics through the centuries who have asked themselves these large questions.
2. Outline syllabus:
The module is divided into three units, each premised upon a set text and a number of supplementary critical works (’extracts’) which will be made available to the cohort on Minerva. Each unit lasts three or four weeks, and is interspersed with essential study skills sessions.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Teaching will be by way of lectures and seminars, supplemented by individual tutorials and self-directed work.
