1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module examines the changing discourse and practice of international aid to education. It aims to critically explore (1) the bilateral and multilateral roles in international development and their influence in education among nation states; (2) the changing international agendas on education within a global context especially the current target for sustainable development; (3) the convergence and divergence of aid including educational aid by the traditional donors and a group of ‘emerging donors’.
Teaching for this module will not follow a regular timetable to allow for fieldwork that is a compulsory element of some modules on the award.

Key concepts : foreign aid, international development, globalisation, developed countries, developing countries, global North, global South, Washington consensus, Post-Washington consensus, sustainable development
Current issues:
- Development of international aid: from post-WWII to post-2015
- Diversities of donor group: purposes and mechanisms
- International agenda: from Washington consensus to Sustainable Development Goals
- Aid architecture and the changing donor-recipient relations: from intervention to cooperation
- South-South cooperation in education: ‘new logic’ to sustainable development?
