1. Brief description and aims of module:

Educational psychology is the study of psychology as it relates to a variety of educational settings (e.g., school, early childhood education, alternative education providers) for children and young people. In particular, it is concerned with addressing challenges such as learning, social, and emotional difficulties, and developmental disorders.

This module provides an overview of core psychological perspectives relevant to educational psychology, with a focus on the role of educational psychology (and educational psychologists) in the UK context.

2. Outline syllabus:

This module will provide an introduction to:

• Core psychological theories as they relate to education and learning

• An introduction to the UK education system and the role of educational psychology

• The role of school in society and childhood

• Considering the classroom context in learning

• The role of an educational psychologist

3. Teaching and learning activities:

This module comprises lectures and seminars to a total four hours of contact time each week. Lectures will introduce core topics and provide a framework for the module. Seminars will be used to extend or explore these topics, with a range of activities such as small-group work and discussions, presentations, practicals, and activities directly related to the assessments.
