1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module introduces you to babies, children and childhood from multiple perspectives. For instance, you will be supported to examine widely accepted policy, pedagogy and provision in relation to babies and young children such as a ‘holistic approach’, ‘child-centred pedagogy’, and ‘developmentally appropriate practice’.
The position of play in multiple childhoods is considered and the module includes discussions on key relationships in the lives of babies and young children and the diversity of socio-cultural contexts in which young children experience the world. During the module you will be introduced to a variety of international perspectives with reference to the Sustainable Development Goals and approaches which influence and challenge our understanding of babies and young children.
There are three days of placement in an early childhood setting within this module. N.B. You must be in possession of a current DBS certificate in order to take this module. Placements are organised by the Institute for Education Partnership Office. You should be prepared to travel up to one hour by public transport to reach your assigned school where you will be encouraged to take an active role in the life of the classroom working alongside teachers and children. Observation, recording and reflection skills are taught in the seminars to enable you to benefit fully from these visits.
