1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module will explore the history of musicals from the early twentieth century up to the present through looking at general developmental trends as well as study of key practitioners and shows that helped to shape the art form.
2. Outline syllabus:
Using a broad range of case studies, we will explore the way in which the musical has evolved from the loosely plotted musical comedies of the 1920s to the eclectic range of formats and styles of today’s Musical Theatre scene that encompasses book musicals, rock musicals, ‘megamusicals’ and chamber musicals.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module will be taught through interactive lecture-seminars and screenings and you will be expected to complete weekly reading / viewing assignments and to participate actively in class discussions.
