1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module builds on the technical training and knowledge in Body in Training 1: The Healthy Dancer. You will be exposed to a more sophisticated and rigorous examination of your awareness of the internal/external dancing body. You will examine the dialogue between the kinaesthetic performance of set material and the anatomy of movement. This will develop your ability to work with greater physical ease and efficiency with more advanced movement vocabulary.
Somatic explorations will encourage you to explore a mindful approach to your training. The aim here is to allow you to focus your attention on noticing and feeling the experiences of your body. This will help you to consider the role this plays on the health and wellbeing of the dancer so that you can reflect upon the impact of this in relation to your own working practices.
2. Outline syllabus:
Regular technique classes have a strong emphasis on the musicality and expression of movement, which will be incorporated into your technical understanding of the vocabulary. You will experience a more sophisticated approach to learning in this module, demanding a greater self motivation and discipline to your work. An investigation into the relationship of an internal somatic approach with the outward facing performance aspect of technique and performance will be an integral element of the module. There will be further exploration of how you inhabit your body and develop methods of whole body consciousness that support healthy practices. There will continue to be a focus on developing skills of self reflection and evaluation and a theoretical underpinning which will directly inform and support a more mindful movement practice.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module is delivered through practical sessions and lectures that focus on both codified techniques and somatic practices. Experiential learning (learning through doing) is a key principle of your learning.
The module will include formative feedback in classes, designed to encourage you to develop an understanding of the importance of self reflection and evaluation. Tutorial support will be offered for monitoring your progress across the module. Self directed study will be required in order to prepare for assessments and develop your independent learning.
The dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva Ultra form the basis of the teaching for this module. The University library, digital video resources, and the knowledge and experience of tutors and the student cohort support the practical work.
