1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module aims to provide you with the skills and confidence you need to engage in a range of dance making activities. You will be introduced to a series of choreographic tools, methods and ideas through practical studio-based tasks and explorations. You will be asked to investigate and analyse your own work and the work of key contemporary practitioners in order to build your understanding of a range of contemporary dance practices. In addition, the module aims to build your subject knowledge by introducing you to dance as a creative practice and asking you to engage with some of the key historical development of the discipline.
2. Outline syllabus:
Choreographic investigations will initially focus on experimentation as a major component of exploring and developing new choreographic material. In the studio, you will be encouraged to play with a range of methods of making, to take risks and to push your own creative and physical boundaries. Regular integration of the analysis of professional dance artists and companies will ensure currency and relevance to the module content. You will also engage in regular workshops with guest practitioners to ensure you experience diverse ways of moving and a range of approaches to dance making. You will then apply this knowledge in the research, development and performance of your own choreography that will require you to work both independently and in collaboration with your peers. Sharing and feedback sessions will allow you an opportunity to receive valuable feedback on your progress.
Alongside the practical classes, a series of lectures and seminars will develop your understanding of the historical context in which we understand and view dance, focusing on the lineage of key choreographers in the field.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
This module will be delivered through practical workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Lecture theatres, dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva Ultra form the basis of the teaching and rehearsal spaces for this module. Theoretical and practical work is supported by the university library, digital video resources, and the knowledge and experience of tutors.
The structure of the learning will gradually move from tutor-led activities towards more self-directed learning, with the expectation that you will engage in independent rehearsals alongside your peers. Self directed study, both in practical and theoretical work, will be a constant companion to your timetabled sessions and you will be encouraged to document your ideas so that you can share these at practice review sessions. You will be expected to enrich your study experience through attending as many student and professional performances as possible.
