1. Brief description and aims of module:
The study of crime in media and culture is well-established in Criminology. A key question has been whether the media distorts the reality of crime which is the focus of this module. To what extent can we rely on representations of crime, law and justice and how far have the lines between information and entertainment become blurred in a world fascinated by criminality? You will study how crime is constructed in a range of factual and fictional media in a global, digital society and learn about the common ways in which crime is depicted and criminals are portrayed. This includes consideration of how media images and texts construct identity and difference through othering and stereotyping. You will also develop your understanding of how media representations and repertoires can shape perceptions, beliefs and attitudes, how they can be criminogenic and how they may influence the social response to crime. Through your investigation of crime in the media, you will also develop skills in communication, analysis, IT and digital literacy.
