1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module explores practical sound synthesis skills to enable the exploration of sound design within the context of narrative forms, such as film and audio composition.
The module aims to:
Develop your awareness of key ideas and practices in the design of sound
Develop your sound design practice through personalised sound synthesis software tools
Introduce you to emerging and unconventional creative approaches for sound design and film scoring practice
2.Outline syllabus
This module builds on the content of the semester one module Sound Design Exploration. In this module you will create your own sound synthesis tools to explore the following content areas:
Sound syntheses: AM and FM synthesis, granular synthesis; noise and filtering
Historical development of film sound design
Arthouse/experimental uses of sound design
Construction of meaning and narrative development through sound
The design of auditory scenes
3.Teaching and learning activities
You will learn through a combination of lectures, workshops and seminars. Tutorial guidance and peer review will be used to support workshop and lab sessions. You will receive class-based tasks as well as online VLE tasks & materials, devised to support your use of directed study time for this module.
