1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module will introduce you to three specialist workshops:
Ceramics (Form & Surface)
Photography
Printmaking
The aim of this module is to provide you with an introduction to specialist workshop processes through a range of practical and theoretical means.
Observational skills and the development of a formal visual language will be underpinned by the examination of the idea of a range of practical techniques as tools tool to engender creativity and conceptual thinking.
Throughout the module you will be encouraged to contextualise and critically evaluate your work and that of others.
2.Outline syllabus:
After three introductory sessions you will be expected to enrol on one of the three subject areas above to undertake a 10 week programme of practical and theoretical introductions that will develop your making & thinking in the subject area you have enrolled in.
Through a series of set projects with an emphasis on individual exploration and investigation, you will develop your fundamental skills in these areas and be introduced to a range of subject specific processes through the use of specialist professional tools, materials and equipment. You will be encouraged to explore a varied range of procedures and techniques relating to both concept and process.
You will explore and develop your ideas through careful research recorded in sketchbooks and context journals.
There will be a series of seminars and talks introducing you to theoretical and critical approaches to contemporary and historical printmaking, photography & ceramics.
You will be informed and instructed in safe working practices and will work within the university’s health and safety regulations.
3.Teaching and learning activities

Weekly demonstrations and workshops.
Project based tasks
Independent study.
Talks and seminars.
One to one tutorials, group seminars and peer group critiques.
Individual tutorials that support regular reflective evaluation of personal ambition and progress.
A range of tasks, learning materials and research guides are published on Minerva supporting the module.
