1.Brief description and aims of module
This module is designed to provide an introduction to economics and globalisation with an emphasis on its applicability to the analysis of contemporary business environment and strategies.
The module will introduce you to the fundamental principles of economics that are relevant to a modern day business, and how economists build and use models to analyse the economic development around us. You will also develop the ability to apply these theories in your study of business and in your daily life. The primary objective of this module is to guide you towards a better understanding of the global economic environment and develop an appreciation of the opportunities available to, and limitations imposed upon, business strategies in this environment.
In this module, you will be able to demonstrate the following Graduate Attributes:
Internationally networked, by studying alongside students from overseas;
Employable, equipped with the skills necessary to flourish in the global workplace, able to work in and lead teams;
Critical thinkers, able to express their ideas in written and oral form, and possessing information literacy.
2.Outline syllabus
The module will have three main sections: (i) an introduction to microeconomics; (ii) an introduction to macroeconomics; and (iii) an introduction to international economics and globalisation. You will be introduced to the theories of demand, revenue and consumer behaviour; the theories of supply, production and cost; the theories of business organisation and market structures; game theory; macroeconomic environment; government policies; international trade and international institutions; multinationals; and globalisation and its impact.
3.Teaching and learning activities
Teaching in the module will consist of 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of seminars/workshops per week. The purpose of the lectures is to provide you with broad overviews of the topics covered in the module. The lectures will include traditional lecturing where you will be expected to take notes and summarise the material covered in the lecture, as well as some more material in Minerva. Seminars/workshops put economic theories into application. They help you to understand economic theories and concepts more deeply by practising them in a wide range of activities.
