1. Brief description and aims of module
This module aims to introduce the World of microbes; their growth, where they are found, how they can be studied and the implications they have for plants and animals. Through practical work you will develop skills in handling these organisms which are invisible to the naked eye. You will cover a broad introduction to the diversity of microbes including bacteria, viruses and protozoa. The module will prepare you for further more specific study in microbiology, but also in areas related to human health, plant growth and the wider environment, all of which depend on microbes for their success. By taking this module you will fulfil the Bath Spa graduate attributes to be able to understand and manage complexity, diversity and change; and to be Critical thinkers: able to express their ideas in written and oral form, and possessing information literacy.
2. Outline syllabus
The sessions will include lectures which introduce the main content and then follow up practicals and workshops which look at how microbes can be cultured and enumerated. Skills in culturing such as aseptic techniques, performing bacterial counts, using selective media and manipulating growth parameters will be included, as well as the use of microscopy in order to identify microbes. The ways in which we can decrease levels of microbial contamination will also feature, for example you will assess food preservation as well as hand washing procedures.
3. Teaching and learning activities
You will have a mixture of lectures and practical/workshop activities each week. Lectures introduce the central topics of the module and these are developed and illustrated through the associated practical work and discussion.
