1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module introduces you to design fundamentals: people, space and form. You will begin to develop essential design principles and processes, and technical drawing skills. You will focus on design for the person and will be asked to engage with issues of use, materiality and aesthetics.
Your first Design Studio module aims to support you in developing your understanding of working in an art and design community, and within the School’s philosophy of ‘Thinking through Making’. It provides you with the opportunity to begin developing your own design ideas and ways of working with reference to historical and contemporary architectural and design precedents.
This module will include an introduction to the School workshops and safe working practices through Health and Safety inductions.
2.Outline syllabus:
Topics covered include:
● Introduction to the studio and workshops
● Health and Safety and Risk Assessment
● Sketchbook, model making and iterative design
● Technical drawing skills
● Ideation and problem solving
● Time management
● Personal planning
● Documentation of process
● Reflection on learning
3.Teaching and learning activities:
Alongside self-directed studio work, these will usually include:
● Workshop introductions and technical tasks
● Staff and guest lecturer presentations
● Seminars on technical topics
● Presentation, display and documentation of your individual work
● Introductions to research and critical thinking
● Group and individual tutorials, and critical reviews
● Active participation in taught sessions and directed learning
● Site and study visits
