1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module falls into two parts which run concurrently: Global Musical Styles and Issues in Ethnomusicology. Global Musical Styles presents an overview of world music: popular, and folk. Music from around the world is experienced and investigated in a practical manner. Research Issues in Ethnomusicology introduces essential ethnomusicological concepts such as identity, migrating music, globalisation, decolonisation.
This module aims to:
Engender engagement with global music and ethnomusicology
Detail basic precepts and methodologies of ethnomusicology and methods for the analysis of popular music.
Explore issues such as sustainability, politics and gender.
2. Outline syllabus:
Lecture topics will include the music of Latin America, Jewish traditions, Korean music, folk music revivals in Britain, Music in Africa, etc., as well as research issues such as gender, decolonisation, approaches to analysis, fieldwork and the impact of technology on music.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Weekly practical workshops
Weekly lectures on aspects of global music and research issues
Practical workshops with visiting specialists.
Indicative content for weekly practical workshops includes Gamelan, Andean music, Samba, African music (Mbira, drumming, dancing), Korean music, folk, Klezmer.
