1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module develops your skills and experience as a performing musician through practical examination of issues central to a successful and sustainable performance career. The module aims to:
Explore a range of issues required for developing effective practice strategies, representation of music and the use of scores
Foster a clear approach to maintaining health and wellbeing within an intensive regime of practice, rehearsal and performance.
Engender musical and critical skills.
2. Outline syllabus:
Sessions in performance studies introduce you to key issues related to the establishment of a productive and sustainable approach to performance. These sessions critically examine a variety of approaches to personal vocal/instrumental practice appropriate to the different kinds of repertoire you may encounter. You interrogate and explore the different types of notational strategies you may encounter as a performer. You consider the function of different editions and sources within your practice. You produce two projects, the first designed to assess your musical development, the second designed to allow you to practically showcase how you have applied the strategic ideas explored in the module to your own practice.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Classes comprise a series of group lectures/seminars alongside individual instrumental lessons. Classes introduce strategic approaches to performance whilst instrumental lessons provide you with individual instrument-specific guidance to blend these ideas directly into your personal performance work.
