1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module introduces students to definitions of creativity and how it is valued and interpreted through the lens of culture. Relationships between innovative arts practices and the cultural industries of the past and present will be explored. The module aims for you to engage with key issues of our understanding of creativity and culture and their significance to your disciplines. You will develop and enhance your critical, analytical, and research skills.
2.Outline syllabus:
Topics to be considered include:
Creativity in historical and contemporary contexts and its association with such terms as innovation, ‘progress’ and genius,
Culture as the expression of human activity and its relationship to creativity in fostering a sense of civilisation, learning, development,
The concepts of the creativity and culture in relation to both the production and consumption of visual and material culture related to your disciplines
We will also consider current debates about the role of creative industries in contributing to job creation, the sense of community, and economic growth.
3.Teaching and learning activities:
Teaching is by lectures, seminars and workshop sessions. Students are encouraged to develop independent and collaborative learning skills, and the confidence to contribute to debates and discussions through set preparation for seminars, formative tasks, the devising of appropriate essay subjects and the identification of associated research.
