1. Brief description and aims of module:
Body in Performance 2 builds on the content of Body in Performance 1 through a more sophisticated and rigorous examination of your awareness of the internal/external body. Developing your ability to work with greater physical ease and efficiency with more advanced vocabulary, you will explore the dialogue between the anatomy of movement and the kinaesthetic performance of set material. You will develop your understanding of the communication of ideas through the body in performance, and explore the individual as an expressive instrument. Your contribution as an individual will be required within the creation of a collaborative performance project. Alongside your practical studies, a theoretical approach to performance practices will be explored, in which you will consider the role of the dancer within the working methods of key contemporary practitioners.
2. Outline Syllabus:
Building on Body in Performance 1 you will experience a more sophisticated approach to learning in this module, demanding a greater self motivation and discipline to your work. A strong emphasis on the musicality and expression of movement will be incorporated into your technical understanding of the vocabulary. An investigation into the relationship of an internal somatic approach with the outward facing performance aspect of technique and performance will be an integral element of the module.
You will participate in a project that will challenge your versatility as a performer, drawing on performance skills including expressivity, musicality, dynamic range, focus and dramatic intent. Research into a variety of performance genres will encourage investigation into developing your individual and collaborative approaches to making.
You will be asked to undertake research into the dancer’s roles and responsibilities within the making of professional performance, drawing on performance practice theory and related practitioners. Critical reflection of your own experiences will also form a key enquiry within the theoretical element of this module.
3. Teaching and Learning activities:
The module is delivered through practical sessions that are both creative and technical in nature, alongside workshops and seminars that will support a written assessment. The module will include formative feedback in classes that will engage you in self reflection and evaluation.
Tutorial support will be offered for monitoring your progress across all areas of the module. Self directed study will be required in order to prepare for assessments and develop your independent learning.
The dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva form the basis of the teaching for this module. The University library, digital video resources, and the knowledge and experience of tutors and the student cohort support the practical and theoretical work.
