1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module aims to introduce you to a holistic perception of the body through the study of somatic practices that teach the art of listening and encourage a deeper awareness and understanding of the self. The module focuses on exploring the body in terms of its form, structure and function and lived experience of the world through an anatomical, physiological and kinaesthetic approach.
The investigation into the use of somatic techniques and evaluation of the body in practice and performance is designed to inform and support other areas of your practical and theoretical study in dance and other creative subjects areas. The module will also encourage the consideration of issues regarding training e.g. ability to work safely, productively and reflectively, in order to nurture longevity in your movement practice.
2. Outline syllabus:
Practical sessions will focus on the way you inhabit your body and explore methods of whole body consciousness in order to enhance your body knowledge, creativity and performance. The concept of viewing the body internally will be explored through experientially developing awareness of your anatomical self, as well as developing skills of concentration, focus and movement improvisation. Theoretical underpinning will directly inform and support your practice.
The study of recognised somatic techniques (e.g. Alexander technique, Ideokenisis) will be combined with a study of the neuro-muscular- skeletal systems and their application to human movement. The intention is to enhance body knowledge, sensitivity and awareness, develop improvisation skills and performance presence and promote creativity.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module will be taught weekly through practical skills sessions and a lecture session. Practical classes will be monitored and informed through a reflective journal, observations, discussions and tutorials. The lecture will inform and support your understanding of key principles. Teaching and learning will be both progressive and reflective, encouraging evaluation of individual performance, as well as ensuring differentiation. You will be expected to participate in directed study in order to continue to develop your skills. Tutorial support will be offered for written work and for monitoring practical progress.
