1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module will provide you with the skills and confidence you need to engage in a range of creative dance practices. Building on many of the choreographic methodologies and explorations experienced in Creative Dance Practice 1, you will now further your understanding of dance as a performative language, and how it can be formed and structured within abstract/formal, theatrical and interdisciplinary contexts. In addition, the module will introduce you to selected theoretical frameworks that will develop your understanding of dance as both a cultural and artistic phenomenon. The dynamic interplay between theory and practice is a key principle of the module.
2. Outline syllabus:
Creative investigations will focus on experimentation as a major component of exploring and developing new choreographic material. A series of lectures/seminars are designed engage your thinking in key issues relating to the making, performing and reading of dance. In the studio, you will be encouraged to play with ideas and concepts, to think conceptually, to take risks and to push your own creative and physical boundaries. You will then apply this knowledge in the research, development and performance of a range of collaborative tasks that will require you to work alongside your peers.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
This module will be delivered through practical workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials. The sessions are specifically designed to provide you with a supportive and encouraging learning environment that focuses on developing you into a confident and reflective individual. The module will encourage you to identify your individual strengths and to plan how you will address areas for personal development.
Lecture theatres, dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva form the basis of the teaching and rehearsing spaces for this module. Theoretical and practical work is supported by the university library, digital video resources, and the knowledge and experience of tutors and the student cohort.
Self directed study, both in practical and theoretical work, will be a constant companion to your timetabled sessions and you will be expected to enrich your study experience through attending as many student and professional performances as possible.
