1. Brief description and aims of module:
Body in Performance 1 provides you with the opportunity to develop and explore a physical understanding of your body as an expressive tool. It will address your understanding of the role of codified technique within classwork and performance. Explorations into performance skills will form a core element of this module and will allow you to developing your technical understanding and ability. An introduction into appropriate studio etiquette and safe practice will also provide the basis for ensuring you pro-actively engage in principles of good working practice.
2. Outline syllabus:
The focus of this module is to introduce you to, and develop, your understanding of performance skills training that will inform your practice throughout the course. You will explore set vocabulary, the process of physical memory and learning, along with your understanding of correct alignment of the body for safe practice. You will build strength, stamina and flexibility while improving the self reflection and evaluation of your own technical progress.
Through a series of workshops you will begin to investigate the key skills and attributes of performance, with a particular focus on physical skills. Through the learning of set material, you will be required to embody specific stylistic qualities that will increase your range of technical and expressive skills. You will work alongside others to rehearse and refine material ready for performance.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module is delivered through regularly classes in codified technique and performance skills. The module aims to introduce you to healthy studio-based movement practice and etiquette and will include formative feedback in class to engage you in self reflection and evaluation. Tutorial support will be offered for monitoring your progress across all areas of the module.
Dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva form the basis of the teaching and rehearsing spaces for this module. Theoretical and practical work is supported by the university library, digital video resources, and the knowledge and experience of tutors and the student cohort.
