Please note that this module is a pre-requisite for the Level 5 module DAN5101-20 Digital Performance Practice 2.
1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module provides an introductory investigation into the performance potential of video technology in relation to dance. It has a specific focus on the choreographic opportunities existent in the processes of filming and editing, and some of the performance potential offered by film, both in an interdisciplinary context and in the context of the single screen. It supports the creative application of digital technology through, for example, the use of cameras and editing software as tools for constructing choreography. You will be encouraged to explore how you can apply the specific skills you are developing in this module with the creative and performance skills you are developing in other areas of the programme.
2. Outline syllabus:
Initially you will have the opportunity to learn a range of technical skills, for example, camera operation and the use of editing software. These skills will enable you to explore choreographic practice in the context of this study area, practice that can occur both in front of the camera, in the editing process, and in the projecting of film. You will be encouraged to be experimental in your approach to the creative aspects of this module. You will work collaboratively with others, and see yourself as an emerging artist in the discipline, reflecting on your own work and its relationship to the wider field.
The module will introduce you to a range of work by professional artists in the field, demonstrating the breadth of work being undertaken nationally and internationally. You will develop analytical skills and apply these to a selection of these works in order to support your understanding of them in a theoretical context and to support you to reflect on your own filmmaking practice which lies at the core of this module.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
The module is delivered through a series of practical workshops, seminars, and self-directed study. Your learning will be reflective and analytical so that you develop your level of understanding of the different technologies and their application in a performance context. Theoretical and practical issues concerning the documentation of work will be addressed enabling you to apply your skills to document your own work, and that of others, in other modules that support practical performance work.
You will have regular feedback during practical sessions and tutorials to support your development in this specialist area. BSU technicians are available to provide a range of support with the software and equipment you will be exploring.
