1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module aims to provide you with the skills and confidence you need to engage in a range of creative dance practices. You will be introduced to a series of choreographic methodologies through practical studio based tasks and explorations, and through the investigation and analysis of your own work and the work of key contemporary practitioners. In addition, the module will develop your understanding of the historical context in which we dance and view dance and how this might inform the construction of choreography.
2. Outline syllabus:
Choreographic investigations and performance work will initially focus on experimentation as a major component of exploring and developing new choreographic material. A series of lectures/seminars are designed to introduce you to dance as a creative practice and engage your thinking in the historical development of the discipline. In the studio, you will be encouraged to play with new ideas and concepts, to take risks and to push your own creative and physical boundaries. You will then apply this knowledge in the research, development and performance of a range of choreographic tasks that will require you to work both independently and in collaboration with your peers. Practice reviews will allow you an opportunity to receive valuable feedback on your progress.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
This module will be delivered through practical workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Lecture theatres, dance studios and the virtual environment of Minerva form the basis of the teaching and rehearsing spaces for this module. Theoretical and practical work is supported by the university library, digital video resources, and the knowledge and experience of tutors and the student cohort.
The sessions are specifically designed to provide you with a supportive and encouraging learning environment that focuses on developing you into a confident and reflective individual. The module will encourage you to identify your individual strengths and to plan how you will address areas for personal development.
Self directed study, both in practical and theoretical work, will be a constant companion to your timetabled sessions and you will be expected to enrich your study experience through attending as many student and professional performances as possible.
