1. Brief description and aims of module:
The module will introduce you to the craft and basic toolkit of scriptwriting. All kinds of scripts will be covered and compared, beginning with formatting and basic principles, so that the basic generic differences between (say) theatre and radio scriptwriting are established.
The module will also deal with the varying routes and processes by which scripts get into performance. You will view, discuss and analyse films, television, radio and theatre scripts, and will write a short TV show / film, radio or theatrical play to gain an understanding of the ultimate aims of scriptwriting. This module will be a step towards the specialist modules in scriptwriting for theatre, television, radio and film at L5 and L6.
2. Outline syllabus:
The module will use a mixture of lectures, seminars, screenings and informal drama workshops. Out of these workshops, each student will develop a number of writing exercises and one more substantial script.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Lectures, seminars, workshops. You will first write a script as part of a group project and then move into writing and discussing your individual ideas.
