1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module is a progression of the Composition module and focuses on embedding practical techniques and exercises for developing collaborative creative processes as an ensemble actor. There is a strong emphasis on practice, which equips you with a series of devising strategies building on the tools introduced in semester 1. Experimental analysis will consider the role of the creative actor in a making process that devises work through adaptation of existing narratives. Research centres on the history and definitions of collaborative practice, as well as an analysis of contemporary national and international professional ensembles.
The module aims are:
To introduce you to a range of approaches, processes and models for ensemble theatre-making.
To extend your appreciation and application of the creative, critical, analytical and interpersonal skills as an actor in a collective making process.
To develop your understanding and application of the interconnection between research and collaborative practice
2.Outline syllabus
This module interrogates the fundamental aspects of devising collaborative work and considers how to adapt existing stories for the stage, through developing a theatrical language, and an understanding of how space, character, rhythm, narrative create form and shape the performance.
As well as gaining an overview of the development of the traditions and movements that have shaped European ensemble practice, the module explores academic writing, accurate referencing, information sources, clarity and consistency of argument and research methodology, to provide the contextual reference for future modules.
3.Teaching and learning activities
This module uses a combination of tutor-led workshops, student-led practice, lectures, and research assignments. Formative assessment involves sharing developments in your devised work in a scratch showing, for which you receive tutor feedback, and subsequently rehearsal notes.
Summative assessment is through one piece of studio-based devised theatre and one essay on taught content.
Self-directed study is expected to help you to prepare for assessments.
It is important to keep a journal or blog recording your development and to use this to evidence any required research along with annotated texts, character profiles, etc. This is not an assessed item, but you are expected to refer to this in class discussion and the Personal Development Profile (PDP) assignment in Skills 2.
The Bath Spa VLE, Minerva, provides information to help develop an appreciation of the broader technical and artistic aspects, which underpin this subject area, and develop skills in independent learning.
