4th Grade Beginning Band

Welcome to 4th Grade Beginning Band!

Learning a new instrument is an exciting time! Although it can be a little daunting at first, learning an instrument is a lifelong skill that you can use for years and years to come! At John Kennedy, we have great pride in our performing ensembles and encourage students to be as involved as possible; singing in chorus, playing in orchestra, and playing in band!

Although playing a band instrument is different than playing a string instrument or singing, they are all related and connected! In fact, singing makes you a better musician! In 4th Grade Beginning Band lessons and rehearsals, we sing A LOT!

Singing is important for three main reasons: 1. It allows the teacher to hear what is going on in a students brain without the physical instrument (flute, clarinet, trumpet, etc.) standing in the way. 2. It sets the foundation for what we will expect to come out of the instrument, and 3. Singing helps us learn songs before we even learn the notes to them on the instrument! It makes playing fun right from the start!

In the tabs under "4th Grade Beginning Band" at the top of this page, you will find many other helpful resources including letters and permission slips, lesson schedule, as well as information about the instrumental series we use called "Jump Right In: The Instrumental Series". Be sure to check out the Voice Thread tab for listening and practice materials for band too!

I hope we all have a great year in the 4th Grade Beginning Band!

What is the goal of participation in music in our schools?

"To create music makers and intelligent music listeners during and beyond our students' formal education, ultimately raising the standard of music in our culture". - Dr. Richard F. Grunow
