What are children expected to learn?
How do we know they are learning?
What do we do if a child has not learned a concept?
What do we do if a child already knows a concept?
Formative assessment is an ongoing process that focuses on the individual child and their learning needs. Formative assessment happens daily within the Montessori classroom and takes many forms: observation, discussion, student-led presentations, student work, and conferencing. A successful guide develops a system of record-keeping that allows space to record their daily interactions with each child. The guide then uses a variety of ways to provide feedback to students and responds to the student’s learning needs through new lessons, additional support, and conferencing with the student. This becomes a cycle of presenting, practicing, observing, reflecting and responding to students learning needs.
