WHAT IS A CITATION?
A "citation" is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the information necessary to find that source again.
INCLUDING:
authors name
date of publication
title of article/journal/website
URL of website
publisher & copyright date if needed
issue, volume and page numbers
WHY SHOULD I CITE?
Giving credit to the original author by citing sources is the only way to use other people's work without plagiarizing.
ALSO:
Shows others where your ideas came from.
Strengthens your work by using evidence from other's research.
Shows the amount of research you've done.
To further "academic conversation" and expand the study of important topics
WHEN DO I NEED TO CITE?
Whenever you borrow words or ideas, you need to give credit to their source. The following situations almost always require citation:
whenever you use quotes ( quotation marks needed)
whenever you paraphrase (no quotation marks, but still need to cite)
whenever you use an idea that someone else has already expressed
whenever you make specific reference to the work of another
whenever someone else's work helped you to develop your own ideas.
