Feminist started as a response to women’s lack of legal, social, and political equality with men. For example, women weren't able to vote or even own property. “Betty Friedan was born in 1921. She attended Smith College in Massachusetts. Her main focus in terms of her activism was the expansion of birth control. She was a feminist author, however her writings were seen homophobic and exclusionary of lower socioeconomic experiences.” This quote talks about Betty Friedan who was a major part in the second wave movement. They talk about how her main focus was the expansion of birth control. My evidence showed how women were only allowed very little rights compared to men. Women weren't able to have any legal power, they couldn't change the fact that their husband could beat them with no consequences. The movement mainly talked about legal and social equality, they also worked on discrimination and reproductive rights
Women lobbied in areas to fight for their rights while the benefits were the fact women got rights and laws made for their sex as a whole. ”the second wave lobbied for equality in all aspects of women’s experience… The many legislative successes in the previous two decades” (Burkett). Women had caused annoyance by lobbying in areas that were public. They had made posters to have a proper protest while they lobbied in areas like the street. To understand what the women were doing, the term lobbying is defined by seeking to influence political power. Women did manage to get a Supreme Court decision about Roe V. Wade (although a bit controversial) which is an act about reproductive rights (1973) and had an Equal Rights amendment added to the U.S. constitution (1972). The Equal Rights Amendment was added so women had equal suffrage, pay, and other equalities that were mostly based on sex.
