Spring Meeting, 2025
Iowa Band Master Conference.
Greetings all..
IBARD continues its active role alongside the IAAE with our mentor program for first and second year teachers. This year we are setting new records in the number of contacts with our beginning teachers.
IBARD Band will be performing at the IBA Conference with Jim Fritz and Leon Keuhner serving as conductors and organizers of this event.
IBARD will have a table at the IBA Exhibit Hall for all the retirees to gather at and share “war stories and the way it used to be tales.”
IBARD will again host a breakfast for all mentors and mentees at the IBA Conference on Friday morning. We wish to thank Rieman and Mid Bell Music for their continued support for the financial expenses of this event. Last year 40 people were in attendance and we are hopeful for the same turnout this year. Also many thanks to Kyle Englehardt for his assistance in helping schedule this event with the hotel Marriott.
IBARD will again be sending out a survey at the beginning of the school year to all registered IBARD members. This list of volunteers will be shared with the general membership.
“The Huddle” band director inservice for new teachers will be held again this year. Jayne Triplett and Jayson Gerth are the chair people of this event.
Pictures and videos of IBARD concerts and events are posted on the IBA Website under the IBARD Committee.
This is my last year as the IBARD Chair. I thank all who have worked with me in this task, we are currently seeking a new chair from our district chairpeople. We will supply the new president with this information after this week’s conference after we determine district IBARD chairs..
Respectfully,
Terry Hanzlik, PHD
SWIBA IBARD Rep and IBA State Chair.
48th year of being a proud IBA Member.
IBARD Fall Report, November 20, 2024
IBA Fall Meeting
Ames, Iowa.
IBARD continues in multiple ways of mentoring, volunteering and supporting the Iowa Band Directors and their association this school year. In multiple ways, we observed retired directors judging, volunteering and supporting band events throughout this past fall. It is our honor to do so and recommend that IBA continue to support their retired directors as well.
Items and Projects:
Mentorship with the cooperation of IAAE with our first and second year teachers involved a large number of our membership . Dozens of new teachers are working in our schools throughout Iowa. Fort Dodge Symposium was held October 26, Terry Hanzlik and Jason Gerth represented IBARD and IBA in helping with sessions and meeting new teachers.
A brochure is available for distribution describing the IBA/IBARD/IAAE mentoring program. The link is https://docs.google.com/document/d/11bOMXGyw5yhNMy_IQIFxU8V-heK5anG4VnwHNPZNuNg/edit?usp=sharing
Below is the link of the IBARD Members who are willing to volunteer in multiple ways this year. 60 members have completed the survey of activities they are willing to participate in. Link is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RNZ8tUsQhaYpTA1cP3xU0F6lqA_bUpKCev6c-Ue7mMg/edit?usp=sharing
IBARD band will be performing at the 2025 IBA Convention. Conductors will be Leon Keuhner, James Fritz and guest conductor will be Myron Welch. Performance of the Perry HS Memorial Commissioned Piece will be performed by the IBARD band. The 2023 IBARD Band Concert is posted on the IBA web page under the IBARD Committee.
IBARD and Rieman Music sponsored the morning breakfast at the IBA Convention at the 2024 IBA Convention. Many thanks to Cliff St. Clair for helping with these arrangements, over 50 mentees and mentors were in attendance. It is our hope that President Englehardt will help us with this sponsorship again this year.
The IBARD Committee Web Page located on the IBA Website has been completely updated with all meeting minutes, mentor information, photos and performances of the IBARD band. We encourage the membership to check out this page for the activities of IBARD.

IBARD Phone Meeting
All district IBARD Representatives
I contacted all district representatives of IBARD to check and see how district mentor programs are going and if there were other projects we needed to be involved with.
Items discussed were as follows:
Mentorship. We believe we have everyone covered, most districts have had at least 1 to 2 times of individual contacts. We have had to replace or switch some mentors with mentees for various reasons. Done without any major issues.
Renergize the mentors to get back out there, “insist on showing up or phone call”
Reserve Booth at IBA. Emails were sent to all exhibitors chair on 1/17
Boot camp report…..Visited with Jane Triplett, it is going to be held on July 19th at SE Polk High School. They are finishing up with arrangements and scheduling.
District representatives…..Please keep track to the best of your ability of open positions this year that have hired new teachers. These will be a target audience for this boot camp attendance. We could do a mailing to school administrators on the importance of their new band directors attending.
4. I am updating the IBARD committee webpage on the IBA website. I am going to be placing the YouTube Recordings from last year’s concert on this page. All mentor information is now stored there along with minutes.
5. The IBARD Survey of PARTICIPANTS is completed. I sent the information to Aaron Nuss who stated he will send it out to the membership. We have about 70 volunteers signed up from IBARD. Please encourage your mentees to contact these folks.
Future Ideas
I hope all of you will help with the IBARD Booth at IBA Convention.
Should IBARD be sponsoring sessions at IBA Convention. Some suggestions would be appreciated. One suggestion is a MENTOR training session, any other ideas????
Respectfully submitted, Terry Hanzlik, SWIBA and State IBARD Chair.

IBA State Meeting
We have not met since the IBA conference but some facts and goals for this upcoming year.
IBARD Breakfast for Mentors and Mentee program was extremely well attended by 40 plus people. Participation for the IAAE/IBARD and IBA Mentor program has grown tremendously this past year. A huge thank you to Rieman Music for covering the cost of this event.
Huddle program for 1st, 2nd and new teachers is July 19th at SE Polk HS.
IBARD Band is planning on performing at the 2025 IBA Conference, conductors have not been selected yet and planning will start before school begins. A performance date and time, along with a rehearsal time and space is needed to help with planning in coordination with the IBA Conference Planning.
IBARD survey of retired volunteers to help with school programs will take place in August. This list will be submitted to the current IBA president and officers with the hope it can be published in the IBA magazine and emailed out to the current active members of IBA. This survey was completed in 2023-24 school year, was submitted but it never was published and emailed out to the membership. We hope for more assistance in this matter this year.
A big thank you to all of the retired directors who helped man the booth and attended the 2024 IBA Conference. Your support is greatly appreciated.
