The book Whirligig by Paul Fleischman falls under the adventure genre. This book wasn't so great and was confusing because it kept switching stories and leaving a cliffhanger then transitioning to another story then back to that cliffhanger. However, I really enjoyed the detailed stories the book held. I would recommend this book to whoever likes a cliffhanger or adventure book because this book shows lots of examples of adventures. One big adventure was one of the characters going to a party and almost dying. It is a short book with a little over a hundred pages, it is easy to read because of the range of vocabulary. Whirligig is an adventure and realistic fiction book about a 17-year-old boy named Brent written by Paul Fleischman. When Brent drives home from a party one night he tries to take suicide when he accidentally kills a girl named Lea. Lea’s mom sends Brent on a journey to build four Whirligig that looks like Lea around the country. So that when people see the whirligigs they will see Lea’s beautiful smile. To be honest I really didn’t like this book because I thought it was so confusing how it changed between different people. Whirligig is a short book but it took me a while to read because I thought the way the author wrote and his choice of vocabulary was really confusing and hard to understand. (Marta. Grade 6)

A 17-year-old kid named Brent Bishop is assigned to construct four whirligigs in each of the four corners of the United States as a penitential act in Paul Fleischman's realistic fiction novel Whirligig. The novel is brief (130 pages), the action moves quickly, and there is simple terminology throughout. Teenagers who like a quick, easy, yet engaging book might consider it.  (Erik. Grade 8)

Whirligig is a novel by Paul Fleischmann. It was released in 1998. It is about a teenager who builds a Whirligig in each of the corners of the United States in order to repent what he did after he accidentally killed someone while he tried to kill himself in a car crash while he was drunk after he left a party. Some things I liked about this book is that it is quite short, but it is still a very interesting book which covers everything it needs to, instead of making it a short, not very detailed story which is something I really liked. Some things I didn't like was the vocabulary was very simple and it made it very quick and easy to read. I recommend this book to teenagers who are interested in a short, interesting realistic fiction books. (Vivan. Grade 8)

The book Whirligig by Paul Fleischman is a realistic fiction type of book. The book is about a boy named Brent who lives in Chicago and is the cause of death of Lea, who was only 18. Later into the book, Brent gets told by the girl who died’s mom to go on a journey to build 4 whirligigs in the four corners of the country, in honour of her daughter. To be honest, I did not like this book at all because I rarely enjoy short books, and I would only consider recommending this to those who are comfortable and do like books like this that not only includes death, but also suicide. Whirligig is a good realistic fiction book by Paul Fleischman. The book tells the story of Brent Bishop, a 17-year-old boy with a turbulent social life that moves cities every few years in America because of his father's car business. One day Brent goes to a party and after an interesting series of events he leaves embarrassingly, and attempts to commit suicide. However, in his attempt, he accidentally kills another teenager, and to repent his actions he is sent to build whirligigs in all four corners of the United States. I liked a few things about this book, such as the themes revolving around isolation, coming of age, redemption, and adventure. The book really creates empathy in the reader for Brent and showcases these themes in a relatable way for teenage readers, it's almost as if I was there with Brent on his journey across the USA. There are several things I dislike about this book, however, this book is really short (around 130 pages) and thus the progression of events is very quick. Oftentimes, we would get a description of a beautiful place on one page but suddenly teleport to a different setting on the next page. Another problem with the book is that there isn't much-complicated vocabulary, which can sometimes make you feel like you are reading a book meant for first grade. I recommend this book to teenagers who enjoy a quick, simple, thought-provoking read. (James E. Grade 8)

In his realistic fiction and adventure book Whirligig, Paul Fleischman tells the story of Brent Bishop, a 17-year-old boy. In the narrative, he attempts suicide because he no longer wants to live. But he accidentally killed an 18-year-old girl named Lea. Lea's mother orders him to build four whirligigs, one in every corner of the country in honor of her daughter. Since they went on many adventures to build the whirligigs, this book falls under the adventure category. It falls under the category of realistic fiction because these occurrences are possible in real life. Overall, I'd give this book a three to five rating because it had some pretty boring sections but was otherwise alright. I would give this book's vocabulary a 3 out of 5 because I had trouble understanding a few words. Because this book contains death and suicide, I would suggest it to more mature readers. (Sean. In this story, This book follows the adventure of Brent who was sent on a journey of repentance. Whirligig by Paul Fleischman is a realistic fiction book about a 17-year-old boy named Brent Bishop who is currently living in Chicago. Brent is, unfortunately, the cause of an 18-year-old girl’s death, whose name was Lea. He didn’t want to live anymore and tried committing suicide. Brent is told by Lea’s mother to go on a journey to build 4 whirligigs (pinwheels) in the four corners of the country, in honor of her daughter. I wasn’t very invested in this book because I usually read books about teenage romance or mystery books - although, this book would be perfect for people that enjoy sad and deep books. I only recommend this book to more mature audiences because it mentions death and suicide.  (Mandalay. Grade 7)

My opinion on this book is that it was really interesting and I think the genre was most likely to be a fiction-type story. In the beginning, they explain how their parent's brent moved to Chicago and they suddenly started dining in the kitchen where they had a small tv. In the bigging, they also explain the character traits and how they look. They also said Brent Bishop was the new kid in eleventh grade and committed social suicide at a party to make himself cool. In the middle of the book Brent's decision to accept the challenge to travel and create whirligigs in Lea's honor. Then All of the whirligigs are finished by Brent. He also thinks to visit the entire country to get more money for Lea. The whirligigs show him a power he was unaware of. At the end of the book, they tell us about how Lea Zamora, 18, is killed in a collision that Brent causes but survives. After that, Brent attempts suicide but doesn't inform anybody since he feels  (Kiran. Grade 7)

Whirligig by Paul Fleischman is about actions, bad actions having consequences, and adventure. It is a very exciting book to read because the first 10 pages might be boring but it gets better as you understand the story. It also makes you excited about what happens next. The main character Brent Bishop is a teenager who went to a party because he wanted to be part of the cool kids but he failed and the owner kicked him out. He then went drunk driving while wanting to suicide. This book is simply Brent building whirligigs of someone’s face to make people smile. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading adventure genre books. It shows the survival of several people working together with only a slim amount of equipment. (Jiwan. Grade 6)

I think the genre is an adventure because the main character of the book, Brent was having a journey around the country. He has met some kids who have problems or worries and solve their problems. I wished that this book went more deeply into each character which can make the story longer and more interesting. I recommend readers imagine what they would've done if they had the same problems with the characters in the book. In conclusion, I liked this book, especially the story. Whirligig by Paul Fleischman was a rollercoaster of a book. It was quite interesting and fascinating for the teenage boy by the name of Brent. Brent gets into a big car crash drunk and kills the other person. The family that Brent had killed in the car crash has assigned Brent to go around the country and do many things to soften the relationship of both between them. While over the country he has to face many obstacles that come his way. This book was a great experience of what could happen in the real world. I really enjoyed this book as I went on this forceful adventure with Brent. There were some downs and ups in this book. This book personally I feel fits in the realistic fiction genre as it just felt like the book was based on a true story. This book was not as challenging for English speakers. I would give this book a solid 4/5 though it was quite short with only 133 pages, it still showed a lot of content and interesting parts that I liked the most. I would recommend this book to people who like books related to what could happen in the real world. Overall fantastic book with text, content and much more.  (Jackson. Grade 8)

Whirligig by Paul Fleischman is not a book for the light-hearted. The story revolves around a teenage boy by the name of Brent after a long night of doing nefarious things he is involved in a car crash while intoxicated and kills the person on the receiving end. The victim's family assigns him to travel around the country and do certain things to appease the victim's parents.

Through the journey, he has to overcome many mental obstacles and he experiences many different things. He has to deal with the cycle of guilt and goes through many low points as he attempts many times to end his own life or block it all out with alcohol or drugs and other leisurely things. This is not only a story about struggle though he hits high points through his travels as he meets people and experiences new things.

My personal experience of reading this young adult fiction book was nothing less than a roller-coaster, as I was going along with Brent on his adventure for the redemption of himself, I feel what he feels and see the things he sees. I would recommend this to someone looking for a more realistic or serious book or if you enjoy young adult fiction. It's quite short with only 133 pages but there is a lot of content. That is about everything when it comes to Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. (Oliver. Grade 8)
