“The Tyrant’s Daughter” by J.C. Carleson, is a novel that tells the life story of Laila. Once living in royalty, the next her father gets killed in a coup and her life turns upside down. Staying in a foreign country and coping with her family issues present a lot of challenges for her. The novel lacked an engaging story plot and there weren't many exciting plots. The book would be a good choice for readers who enjoy realistic fiction and a little bit of thriller. Several inappropriate content elements make this book suitable for readers aged 12 and older. "The Tyrant's Daughter" by J.C Carleson is a story that fits under the genre realistic fiction. In this novel, a 15-year-old girl called Laila is the daughter of a brutal dictator. She lives a fancy life surrounded by security and money until a conflict turns into war and kills her father. After his death, Laila, her 7-year-old brother, and her mother must move to America for their safety and have to learn how to live like normal citizens, with no luxuries, different traditions, and rules. I rated this book a three because I enjoy fast-paced books but this one was pretty slow. I would recommend it for grade 7 and above because it is a tough topic that may be difficult to understand for lower grades. (Nina, Grade 8)
