The Book Thief, By Markus Zuzak, is a tragic and deeply touching Historical Fiction book about Liesel, a displaced german girl sent to live with a foster family during World War 2. Once she discovers her first book, her foster father teaches her to read and it soon becomes an obsession. The book is narrated by death, who leaves little notes and poems throughout the book, sometimes making it a little harder to understand. The words themselves however are not challenging to read. The book is very frank in it's portrayal of the Nazi party, the war, and their effects. so I would recommend it for ages 10 and up. There is light swearing, mostly in german. Nothing too bad. This book is very long, 552 pages from cover to cover, so it will take you a few evenings to finish. (Anna. Grade 7)
