Revolution, by Jennifer Donnelly, was heart-wrenching in a way that I hadn't experienced before reading. It follows the story of a teenager named Andi who is angry at the world. She is angry at her father for never being there, angry at her mother for not being able to cope, and struggling to deal with the heartbreaking loss of her younger brother Truman. After noticing her struggling, her father decides that the best thing for her would be to take her with him to Paris over winter break. While in Paris, Andi discovers a diary written by a girl during the french revolution who has very similar feelings in very different circumstances. Andi finds comfort in those similarities until the past comes to life one night in the catacombs. I would describe the book as being historical fiction because about one-third of the book is from the viewpoint of the girl during the french revolution. There are elements of murder, suicidal thoughts, death, and blood. Because of this, I would recommend the book for ages 12 and up. I really liked this book because it switched between time periods so seamlessly and in such a creative way. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the french revolution of the historical fiction genre. (Anna. Grade 7)
